Following high school graduation, Tom worked in construction, until he became a model. He modeled for a few years, and during this time, Tom met Jamie White. Tom and Jamie moved to Los Angeles, so Tom could pursue an acting career.

Tom’s landed a guest star role on “Judging Amy” as a karate instructor named Rob Meltzer. He appeared in a total of six episodes of the show between January – May 2001. Tom had a cameo role as a male victim on “Special Unit 2” in May 2001, and then as a Fraternity college student in the pilot for “Undeclared” in September of 2001. It was in early 2001 that Tom got the role that would make him famous: the role of a young Clark Kent/Superman on Smallville. Smallville’s pilot aired in October 2001 on the WB network. Smallville became an instant hit, and Tom helped to define Clark Kent for a new generation of Superman fans. He married Jamie White in July of 2002, following the first successful season of Smallville.

Tom has received some recognition and some awards since taking the role of Clark Kent. He was named one of People magazine's "Breakthrough Stars of 2001." He was nominated four times for "Best Actor in a Television Series" by the Saturn Awards, and he was nominated for Teen Choice Awards at least three times. He won his first Teen Choice Award in 2001 for Choice TV Male Breakout Star. Tom also won a Teen Choice Award in 2009 in the category of "Choice TV Actor: Action Adventure".

While starring in Smallville, Tom made his feature film debut in Cheaper by the Dozen in December 2003, co-starring with Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. The comedy was successful and a sequel Cheaper by The Dozen 2, was released in December 2005. Tom played Charlie Baker, the eldest son, in both movies. In addition, Tom starred in the horror film, The Fog, which was released in October of 2005, in which he played Nick Castle. The Fog was a remake of the cult horror film by John Carpenter. All three of Tom’s films have had box office success.

Smallville moved to the new CW Network at the beginning of season six. Starting in season five, Tom added the role of Director to his resume. Tom directed his first Smallville episode, "Fragile", in April 2006; a second episode, "Hydro", in January 2007; a third episode “Apocalypse”, in May 2008; a fourth episode "Injustice", in May 2009, and a fifth episode "Legends", in February 2010. In addition to his skills as an actor, Tom has exhibited a natural talent as a Director. Smallville will begin an unprecedented tenth year this fall. Tom has now been named a Co-Executive Producer for the show as well, beginning with season nine and continuing into season ten.

In season five, the cast celebrated the filming of the 100th episode of Smallville, and the show was also picked up by the ABC Family Channel in syndication. At the end of the fifth season, Smallville became the longest-running live-action, most successful TV show about the Superman story.

In addition to his work as lead actor, Director, and Executive Producer for Smallville, Tom started his own production company in the fall of 2009, aptly named Tom Welling Productions. The first offering, "Hellcats", has been picked up by the CW Network for the 2010-2011 season. Hellcats is from Bonanza Productions, Inc., in association with Tom Welling Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and CBS Television Studios. The Executive Producers are Tom Welling, Kevin Murphy, and Allan Arkush.
